Preparing Files for Print

How to Prepare Files for Large Format Printing

Correct file preparation is crucial for high-quality printing. In this guide, we will cover the basic requirements and tips.

1. Color Model

Always use CMYK color model. Screens use RGB (Red, Green, Blue), but printers range use CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key/Black). Converting from RGB to CMYK can cause color shifts, so it is best to design in CMYK from the start.

Tip: Deep black should be C60 M40 Y40 K100, not just K100.

2. Resolution

For large format printing, resolution depends on the viewing distance.

  • Close up (< 1m): 150-300 dpi
  • Medium distance (1-5m): 72-150 dpi
  • Far distance (> 5m): 36-72 dpi

3. Formats

We accept the following formats:

  • .TIFF (preferred for raster) - flatten layers, LZW compression is allowed.
  • .PDF - standard PDF/X-1a.
  • .AI / .EPS - convert fonts to outlines, embed links.

4. Bleeds and Safety Margins

  • Bleeds: Add 3-5mm background extension beyond the trim line.
  • Safety Margin: Keep text and logos at least 5-10mm away from the edge.
  • Grommets: If using grommets, keep important elements 40mm from the edge.

Checklist

  • File is in CMYK
  • Size is 1:1
  • Fonts are outlined
  • Resolution is appropriate
  • Layers are flattened (for TIFF)
