When ordering a lightbox, one of the main technical questions is what to make the face panel from. Most often, the choice is between classic acrylic and modern textile (Textile Backlit).
There is a stereotype that fabric is “just a banner,” a choice for cheap temporary signs. In fact, technologies have stepped far ahead. In this article, we will break down the real operational differences of these materials so you can choose the optimal option for your tasks.
1. Acrylic Lightbox (Classic)
Acrylic (Plexiglas) is a hard sheet plastic. The traditional choice for outdoor signs and structures where rigidity is important.
Features and Advantages
- Vandal Resistance. On the street, especially at low heights, hard plastic is more reliable. It is harder to puncture or cut than tensioned fabric.
- Glossy Texture. Acrylic gives a glass-like surface. If you need the effect of a smartphone screen or perfect gloss, this is your choice.
- Complex Geometry. Acrylic is indispensable if the logo has a complex shape (circle, individual letters, crystal). Tensioning fabric over a complex figured frame is technically much harder and more expensive.
Technical Limitations
- Sheet Size. A standard sheet of acrylic is 3x2 meters. If your sign is longer than three meters, a seam is inevitable. During the day it looks like a thin line, but when backlit it can cast a shadow or cause bright spots.
- Difficulty of Replacement. If you want to change the image (for example, update the menu or promotion), you will have to call an installation crew, dismantle the face panel, and re-apply the film.
- Glare. The glossy surface reflects the sun and bright lights in shopping centers, which sometimes interferes with reading the information.
2. Fabric Lightbox (Textile Lightbox)
This technology uses a special polyester with a light-diffusing coating rather than ordinary banner fabric. The fabric is tensioned onto an aluminum profile using a silicone strip (SEG) sewn around the perimeter.
Why It Is the Modern Standard for Retail
- Easy Image Replacement. This is a key difference for businesses where promo materials change frequently. Any employee can replace the fabric canvas in 5 minutes without special tools. No need to call installers — you just order a new fabric, it comes in an envelope, and you tuck it into the profile.
- Image Quality. Printing on fabric (usually UV or dye sublimation) yields deep blacks and saturated hues. The matte texture of the fabric does not glare, so the image reads perfectly from any angle.
- Seamless Format. Fabric is a roll material. This allows for huge light walls up to 50 meters long without a single seam.
- Logistics. A fabric poster can be folded and sent by courier in a regular envelope. It does not wrinkle when stretched on the frame.
Comparison of Characteristics
| Characteristic | Acrylic Box | Fabric Lightbox |
|---|---|---|
| Image replacement | Labored (requires installation) | Simple (DIY) |
| Surface | Glossy (can glare) | Matte (no glare) |
| Maximum size | Up to 3 meters without seam | Virtually unlimited |
| Structure weight | Heavy | Light |
| Cut resistance | High | Medium |
| Cost of ownership | Expensive to update | Cheap to update |
Recommendations from UD PRINT Specialist
When to choose ACRYLIC:
- The sign is placed outdoors in a pedestrian-accessible zone (vandal protection is important).
- It is a permanent sign with the store name that won’t change for years.
- A complex, figured shape of the structure is required.
When to choose FABRIC LIGHTBOX:
- The sign is placed indoors (shopping mall, office, showcase).
- You plan to regularly change the image (seasonal collections, promotions, menus).
- A premium look is required without plastic glare.
- Illumination of a large area without visible seams is needed.
In our showroom at 293 Tole Bi St, samples of both technologies are presented. You can visit and assess the material texture and ease of textile canvas replacement yourself.
