There is no “best” sign. There is only the right solution for specific operating conditions, budget, and wind loads. In this engineering review, we will analyze how to choose a technology that will last 10 years, rather than fading in a single summer.
1. Dimensional Illuminated Letters
The gold standard of urban navigation. Maximum readability and aesthetics.
This is not just plastic with light inside. It is a complex assembled construction (“sandwich”) where each layer is responsible for durability and visual effect.
Light Architecture: Types of Illumination
We divide dimensional letters into three main types based on the illumination method. Each solves its own set of problems.
Front Lit
Only the front face is illuminated. Sides are opaque. Maximum brightness.
Halo Lit (Contre-jour)
The front is dark, light is directed backwards onto the wall. Creates a soft halo around the letter.
Full / Side Lit
Both the face and the sides light up. "Candy" effect. Ideal for interiors.
A. Front Lit
The face panel made of opal acrylic (Plexiglas) diffuses the light of LEDs mounted on the back panel. The sides are opaque and do not light up.
- Where to apply: Shopping malls, store facade signs. The most readable option.
B. Halo Lit (Contre-jour)
The face and sides are opaque (light-blocking). The back panel is transparent. The LEDs shine backwards, onto the facade.
- Where to apply: Beauty salons, boutiques, Loft-style offices. Requires a smooth matte wall.
C. Full / Side Lit
The letter is made entirely of acrylic. Both the face and the sides light up, creating a “candy” effect.
- Where to apply: Interiors, reception areas, creative spaces.
Side Materials: Battle of Technologies
How well a sign survives the Almaty summer depends on the choice of the side material.
| Side Material | Pros | Cons | UD PRINT Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| PVC + Film | Budget-friendly, fast production | Can deform when heated >60°C (south side) | Ideal for shaded sides and indoors |
| Aluminum Side | Perfect geometry, factory polymer coating, not afraid of heat | 30-40% more expensive | Must Have for sunny sides and durable signs |
| Stainless Steel | Premium look (gold/silver), lifetime warranty on the body | High cost, heavy weight | For prestigious offices, banks, government agencies |
2. Lightboxes (Illuminated Signs)
Area structures for maximum coverage.
A lightbox is not always “just a box.” We divide them into classes depending on the assembly technology and purpose.
Type 1: Composite Box with Inlay (Premium)
The box is assembled from opaque composite (metal). Openings are cut in it on a CNC router, into which thick acrylic (10-15 mm) is inlaid.
- Effect: Only the logo lights up; the box itself is matte and monolithic.
- Application: Restaurants, entrance groups of business centers.
Types 2 and 3: Banner and Profile Lightboxes
- Banner Box (Grand Format): Face is made of translucent banner. Allows making signs up to 20 meters long without seams. Ideal for supermarkets.
- Profile Lightbox: Aluminum profile + acrylic. Easy image replacement. A great option for seasonal promotions.
3. Rooftop Installations
The premier league of outdoor advertising. Image and dominance.
This is full-scale construction. The main challenge here is the wind load. In Almaty, gusty winds can destroy a weak structure.
Engineering Safety Requirements
- KMD Project: Mandatory load calculations by a structural engineer.
- Foundation: We use concrete ballast blocks so as not to drill into the roof and disrupt the building’s waterproofing.
- Electrical: Remote control cabinets with voltage surge protection and timers.
Summary Table of Characteristics
| Characteristic | Dimensional Letters | Lightbox (Composite) | Banner Box | Rooftop Installation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Budget | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
| Brightness | High (concentrated) | Medium (accent) | High (fill) | Maximum |
| Wind Resistance | Medium | High | Medium (windage!) | Extreme |
| Lifespan | 7-10 years | 10+ years | 3-5 years | 10+ years |
